The amazing forces behind SIGHT UNSEEN have put together this one month pop-up shop at CREATURES OF COMFORT. It's chock full of amazing works by artists and designers of all stripes (I'm definitely going home with at least a few things!).

Sight Unseen also just put out this amazing book! I haven't put it down since I got it. I'm so happy to have had them include me in it - and some of my more colorful ceramics as well! I'm also super touched by the article they wrote.

spring dying class

Fiber Reactive Dyes with Shabd

In this 4 week class, I will teach you the basic procedures for dyeing with Procion dyes, by immersion and direct dye methods, with both cellulose and protein fibers. You will learn various tying, dying and shibori techniques, as well as basic color theory and design concepts for dying. It will be fun, and colorful and bright! Discover the dyer in you and design your own dye patterns! Students will focus on swatches to perfect technique and in the last class work on individual projects.

No experience necessary. Classes are designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. At TAC, our mission is to provide skills and knowledge for a lifetime! All necessary materials are included for swatch making. Any additional fabrics and materials will need to be supplied by the student based on their vision. Also, we have Open Studio time for students to put their new knowledge to practice.

The Textile Arts Center is a beautiful 3200sf space in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens dedicated to providing support to fiber artists and everyday people interested in working with fibers. TAC holds classes, workshops and special events as well as running open studio hours, hosting gallery exhibits and running an artist in residency program.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

the church of the virgin of guadalupe is a sacred place for mexicans who come in droves from all over the country, some walking on their knees to be at the place of a supposed miracle some years back. they also seem to come to buy plastic tsotchkes and anime representations of mary and jesus. there are two churches here, an old one and a new modern one built in the fifties. there is a special image of the virgin mary at the back of the modern church, and horizontal conveyer belts/escalators carrying people back and forth in rows in front of it to give everyone a chance to see it. i took a nice video but i cant figure out how to upload it...

after the markets, my favorite place to walk around in mexico city is the network of busy streets in the center of town. each street is dedicated to one type of product, stores upon stores selling the same thing, the products spilling out of the shop doors and organized in stacks, hanging, in rows by color and size. a street for metal clasps, one for car parts, another for foam rubber, another for custom made letter press invitations. my favorite is the street of rope stores i found last time i was here.
